Overview

The BA (Hons) English Language and Communication (ELC) programme is designed to equip students who do not speak English as a first language with excellent communication capabilities for professional employment in English as a Second Language (ESL). Students who are learning English as a second or additional (foreign) language will be able to develop graduate level communicative competence in English Language, and to use English effectively.

Graduate employability has been a matter of concern to governments throughout the region, thus practical applications are strongly featured in the programme, which is geared to linking theory and practice through critical reflection to build work related skills as well as sound academic knowledge. Observation and experience of work (via Co-Operative courses), inquiry & project activities are integral to the learning processes of the programme.

Academic Requirements

STPM

Passed at least two (2) subjects with a minimum Grade C (GP 2.00) in any two (2) subjects

A-Level

Passed at least two (2) subjects with a minimum Grade D in any two (2) subjects

FIVE (5) credits and minimum of Grade B in English

International Baccalaureate

A minimum score of 26/42 points from Six (6) subjects

Matriculation

A minimum CGPA of 2.0 with a credit in English at SPM/O-Level

Australian Year 12 or equivalent

A minimum mark of 60% in five (5) subjects, or a minimum ATAR score of 65

Canadian Pre-U

A minimum average of 60% in six (6) subjects

Other qualifications deemed equivalent to STPM / A-Level by Malaysian Qualifications Agency

Minimum overall average of 60%

UCSI Foundation in Arts

A minimum CGPA of 2.0 with a credit in English at SPM / O-Level

Diploma/ Advance Diploma/ Degree/ equivalent

Completed (minimum CGPA 2.0/4.0)
(credits are required for English at SPM / O-Level)

* Discretion is given to Head of School to deal with borderline academic requirements.

Note: The credit requirement in English at the SPM level can be waived if the said qualification includes English subject/s and its achievement is equivalent to or exceeds the credit requirement of the subject at the SPM level.

Note (Source: Surat Pekeliling MQA Bil 2/2016):

The terms of credit in English at SPM level for the candidate with STPM, STAM, Diploma and Matriculation/Foundation qualification can be exempted if the candidate obtained English and its achievement is equivalent or higher than the required credit of English at the SPM level.

  • International students holding equivalent academic qualifications but which are not conducted in English, are required to sit for the English Placement Test, which may result in the taking of the English for Tertiary Education (1 to 10 months). Students who intend to pursue the above undergraduate programme directly, are advised to fulfil the above English requirements prior to commencing their studies at the University.
