Overview
This novel PhD programme aims to produce leaders in academia and industry through its multi-disciplinary approach to sustainability. Graduates will be equipped with quantitative and qualitative analytical skills necessary to formulate and champion technological solutions to global sustainability issues.
Working with Sunway University’s team of highly qualified, experienced and world class academicians, PhD candidates would gain exposure to the various systems involved in sustainability issues and debates. Programme Structure
Modules
Candidates are required to take only one module namely Research Methodology to learn the techniques used to identify, select, process, and analyze information about a topic in research, in addition to the thesis component.
Thesis
The PhD is awarded based on the successful completion of a thesis. The thesis should demonstrate proficiency, criticality and mastery in the subject or chosen area of research.

Entry Requirements
Master’s Degree
A Master’s degree (Level 7, MQF) in Science or Engineering disciplines which can be accepted by the University Senate.
Other Qualifications
Any other qualifications will be considered on a case-to-case basis and subject to the approval and acceptance by University Senate.
English Language Requirements
- IELTSÂ 6.0
Note: Candidates who have completed a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in English would have met the language requirement.
Application Procedure
A) Applicants will be required to submit the following completed and signed documents:
- Sunway Postgraduate application formÂ
- One (1) passport-sized photograph
- Research statement: The statement should briefly describe the research question that the applicant has discussed with his/her future PhD supervisor
- Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- PGR Scholarship application form (if any)
B) The following true copies of documents must be certified:
- Passport (all pages including blank pages – for international students)/Identity card (for Malaysian students)
- English Language Qualification (IELTS/TOEFL/MUET/others) – for international students
- Academic qualifications/results (Certificates and complete transcripts) (Degree/master’s degree/others)
C) One (1) reference letter typed on official letterhead. The letter must be emailed by your referee using his/her official email to the Programme Coordinator.
Research Proposal
The research proposal should comprise between 1,000 and 1,500 words (excluding references), and covers the following structure:
- An appropriate title for the research project (designated supervisor if known)
- Introduction and justification of the study, which includes
- Research background
- Problem statement
- Research objective(s)
- Research question(s)/hypothesis
- Literature review
- Research methodology
- Proposed research schedule
- List of references
