The Master of Information Technology provides the knowledge and skills required to design, develop and maintain complex systems using state-of-the-art technologies and methodologies. It will provide you with advanced skills and introduces state-of-the-art techniques used in the design and construction of IT solutions, and research skills needed to assess the effectiveness of a solution or technology.

Students also have the opportunity to apply their skills through industry-related project work, including industry-linked projects for real clients. This project work can demonstrate students’ skills and knowledge to potential future employers.

The program incorporates units from the Graduate Diploma of Information Technology and Graduate Certificate of Information Technology.

Course structure and duration

To qualify for the award of Master of Information Technology students must complete 14 units of study (200 credit points) as follows:

  • Six (6) IT core units (75 credit points)
  • One (1) Specialisation (100 credit points) consisting of:
    • Two (2) core units (25 credit points)
    • Four (4) technology projects (75 credit points)
  • Two (2) electives (25 credit points)

The duration of study is 1.5 years full-time. Students will undergo three long semesters of 9 weeks and three short semesters of 6 weeks. Each unit of study has a minimum 6 hours of class contact time per week or its equivalence. Students who have an undergraduate background in computer science / information and communication technology may be exempted from one semester of study (4 units) thus completing the program within 1 year.

Course learning outcome

On successful completion of this Course students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a coherent understanding of the fundamental aspects of ICT solutions including the use of a range of tools and techniques for requirements capture, solution design and construction, and project management
  • Apply a coherent and advanced knowledge of Information Technology, critically evaluate trade-offs, and create innovative solutions to complex problems with intellectual independence
  • Communicate information proficiently to a variety of audiences, demonstrating scholarship of ICT foundations, as well as recent advances in the ICT field within the context of an IT specialisation
  • Reflect on, and take responsibility for their own learning, manage their own time and processes effectively by regularly reviewing personal performance as a means of managing continuing professional development
  • Apply knowledge of research principles and methods to plan and execute a piece of research with independence demonstrating the ability to analyse, process and synthesise complex information
  • Demonstrate personal discipline, scholarship of the field, critical thinking, and judgment by completing a substantial capstone project using contemporary techniques

Units of study

To be eligible for the award of Master of Information Technology, students must complete 14 units of study (200 credit points) comprising of 12 units of study (worth 12.5 credit points each) and two (2) double unit of study (worth 25 credit points each).

Entry Requirements

  • A recognized Bachelor’s degree with a minimum CGPA of 2.75, or
  • A Bachelor’s Degree or its equivalent, with a minimum CGPA of 2.50 and not meeting CGPA of 2.75, can be accepted subject to rigorous internal assessment process, or
  • A Bachelor’s Degree or its equivalent, with a minimum CGPA of 2.00 and a minimum of 5 years working experience in a relevant field may be accepted.

English Requirements

  • IELTS 6.5 (no individual band below 6.0)
  • TOEFL (Internet based) of 79 (Reading no less than 18; Writing no less than 20)
