Overview
The Post Basic in Renal Nursing is a 6-month programme offered by the School of Medical and Life Sciences at Sunway University. The programme is designed to provide nurses with the opportunity to enhance their knowledge, attitude and skills in the field of Renal Nursing. In this programme, the learners will explore both theoretical and practical nursing skills through comprehensive stimulated clinical nursing scenarios, engagement with health care and practical internship.
Programme Structure
Basic Medical Sciences
This module aims to prepare the learners to perform assessment for basic nephrology which includes anatomy and physiology of renal and urinary system, pharmacology for patients with renal and urinary diseases and dietary for patients with nephrology diseases.
Behavioural Sciences
This module focuses on the understanding of the history of renal nursing, the ethical and cultural aspects in renal nursing, role of advance practice in renal nursing and future trends in renal nursing.
Nursing Sciences
This module equips students with advanced knowledge and skills for managing kidney disease patients, focusing on haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, renal transplantation, and palliative and pediatric nephrology care. It emphasises critical thinking, decision-making, and comprehensive nursing care for patients and their families in various renal therapies.

Clinical Placement
This module enables learners to apply their classroom and lab-acquired knowledge, skills, and attitudes in diverse renal care settings. Learners will gain practical experience in renal wards, operating theatres, haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, renal ICUs, urology clinics, and nephrology clinics.
Entry Requirements
For Malaysian Candidates only
(Not applicable for International Candidates)
- Possess a Diploma in Nursing from a recognised institution by MNB
- Registered with MNB
- Possess current Annual Practising Certificate (APC) for nurses from MNB
- Minimum two (2) years clinical working experience. Experience in the Renal Care setting is an added advantage.
- All candidates MUST be certified medically fit by a registered medical practitioner as required by the governing body.
- Candidates MUST not have any physical disabilities or impaired senses that hinder nursing dexterity.
